Objective: To research and conclude the similarities and differences (such as the indications, actions, dosages, usages and contraindications, etc.) between the treatment of the exogenous and endogenous diseases of the Chinese traditional medicine(TCM for short) compatibility in Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Decoction family of Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases, by summing up Zhangzhongjing's use rules about these TCM compatibility, collecting the theoretical and practical experiences of some medical specialists in history, to analyze the mechanism, and reveal the law and technique of the TCM compatibility in the clinic application. Methods: To review all the aspects of the 23 pairs of TCM compatibility in Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases about their clinical application, compatibility, dosage, administration and contraindication referring to Medical Treasures of the Golden Chamber by recuring to literature trimming and horizontal comparison; through vertical comparison to summarize all the expounding and clinical application experiences of the TCM compatibility which are mentioned in the important medical literatures, treatises of materia medica, some representative doctors and my tutor about how to use them. To study the main application experiences of the TCM compatibility since Eastern Han Dynasty and conclude the similarities and differences of the TCM compatibility in the treatment of the exogenous and endogenous diseases, probe into the causation and the mechanism extensively, and expect to find out some rules of their clinic application by cross-references and comparing. Results: The TCM compatibility in the Chaihu Decoction family almost cover all the common TCM compatibility that are used by Zhangzhongjing, this dissertation collected more than 40 high frequency Chinese traditional medicine compatibility in the Chaihu Decoction family, for the length of this paper's limit, only 23 pairs of TCM compatibility were selectively expounded such as Chaihu-Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Chaihu-Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae), Chaihu -Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Chaihu-Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Chaihu-Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Chaihu-Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Chaihu -Muli(Concha Ostreae),etc. Each TCM compatibility was expounded from four aspects: application of Zhangzhongjing, application of medical specialists after Eastern Han Dynasty, dosage & administration and contraindication. Conclusion: In the course of treating the diseases of exogenous and endogenous, some of the TCM compatibility have absolutely different actions, but the others have the same or similar effectiveness. The different directions and effectives of the TCM compatibility between the exogenous and endogenous diseases may due to three reasons below: the unification between the holism of TCM and the integrality of the Chinese medicine, the mutual infiltration between the syndrome differentiation of six meridians and zangfu-viscera and the actions of the TCM compatibility should be complicated as a whole for the strictly composing of the formulae, which is affected by many factors, such as the compatible environment, dosage, processing, method of decocting & taking medicine, pattern of the prescription and so forth. This study inaugurates a new idea and makes a useful attempt for the research of the TCM compatibility, provides a more direct basis on the clinical applications of the TCM compatibility and prescriptions.
