Background and objective: Tumor growth and metastasis rely on angiogenesis. Blocking angiogenesis is an effective strategy to hold back tumor growth. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and endostatin are both important in the process of angiogenesis. VEGF is an angiogenetic factor and endostatin is an antiangiogenetic factor respectively. Many reports indicated that serum concentration of VEGF,endostatin increase significantly in non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC). This research is to study the correlatin about VEGF,endostatin serum concentration,tissue expression and mRNA level in patients of NSCLC.Methods: VEGF,endostatin serum concentration and tissue expression were determined in 111 patients with NSCLC by ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) and immunohistochemicalstaining respectively. And 55 patients of them were determined VEGF and endostatin mRNA level by RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) with the tissue were disposed soon after surgery.Results: VEGF,endostatin serum concentration,tissue expression and mRNA level were significantly increased in patients with NSCLC. The ratio of VEGF and endostain was 13.95±8.84 , which was significantly higher than the healthy (8.27±6.09)(P=0.000). 64.5%(71/111) of the patients expressed VEGF positively in cancer tissue and 41.4%(46/111) expressed endotatin. The positive expression of VEGF was related with tumor size. Serum concentration and mRNA level of endostain were related to the tumor differentiation. In female,adenocarcinoma, the positive expression elevated (P<0.05). No correlation was found between VEGF and endostatin about serum concentration,tissue expression and mRNA level. Significantly correlation was found among those three aspects of VEGF(P<0.05) while no correlations were found about endostatin(P>0.05).Conclusions: Serum concentration of VEGF,endostatin were significantly higher than the healthy, the ration of VEGF and endostatin elevated. Intense correlation was found among serum concentration,tissue expression and mRNA level of VEGF.
