Buddhist Art is a phenomenon of art arising from the needs of the religion enlightenment activities or mission Life, which is associated with Buddhism activities, adapt to Buddhist ideas and beliefs, and submit to demands of the Buddhist worship and ritual requirements. With a Buddhist sense, content, purpose, function, Buddhist Art covers various sectors of Fine Arts. Therefore, Buddhist art research is a kind of interdisciplinary studies related to two areas of Buddhism and the art, including the content of art, religion, archeology, history, cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.There are two basic methods to study Buddhist art. One is based on Buddhist art creation to recognize and understand the Buddhist culture, through researching artwork and images to sum up the characteristics of the Buddhist art works; or referencing Buddhist literature to explore the nature of Buddhist art and its religious significance. The other is, based on the Buddhist literature, to sum up the significance of Buddhist art, the development of the origins and its art history position, through analyzing the Buddhist scriptures and art-related literature data. This kind of study is an aspect of Buddhist literature research. And at present the second method is rarely used to study the Buddhist art theory. Looking at history and current status of Chinese Buddhist art studies, most are still based on the specific form of art to study the Buddhist art.Buddhist classics are not works of specialized art theory. But art exposition in which is an integral part of the Buddhist art theory, which has important implications for us to understand Buddhist art theory. Hence the second method can not be ignored in collecting and collating Buddhist Art Literature to summarize the characteristics of Buddhist art theory. The method of literature analysis can also compensate for the inadequate in the current study of Buddhist art and Buddhist literature.By compiling, analyzing, describing in detail the Buddhist scriptures and art theory of literature data from the Han to Tang periods in China, the paper is try to discover its characteristics and rules and to interpret its important position and influence in Buddhist literature research. The study covers kinds of documentation, images and physical data——Buddhist scriptures translated into Chinese from the Han to Tang periods, art literature, a variety of Buddhist-related materials in non- Buddhist literature which in relation to art theory, and works of Buddhist art image and physical data.This paper's value lies mainly in three aspects. First of all, from the perspective of Buddhist thought and cultural connotation, it analyzes the religious significance of Buddhist art literature and significant impact on the art theory by Buddhist thought. Second, it discusses the development, dissemination, spread and changes in practical application of Buddhist art by studying art theory, techniques, examples and other aspects of Buddhist art literature. The last, based on literature research, it expounded the application and the status of Buddhist art theory in Buddhism. Also it describes the usefulness of the Buddhist art and its influence on the art's self-development.
