Research On The Non-patient Verb-object Compunds In Modern Chinese

ContenContent: The non-patient V-O (Verb-Object) compound is a unique type of structure inmodern Chinese.The grammatical and semantic structure of non-patient V-O compounddoesn't have correspondences. Although the grammatical structures are all verb-objectconstruction, there are different kinds of semantic structures. While compared with the otherlanguages, English for example, non-patient V-O compound has the ability of using the fewerwords to express abundant meanings, which best represents the economic principle oflanguage.From the combination of static and dynamic point of view, together with the combinationgrammatical and semantic analysis, this thesis does research on the non-patient V-Ocompound from different angles applying the prototype, construction and figure-groundtheories. The thesis goes further on analyzing the grammatical structure'and constructionalmeaning'influence on the non-patient V-O compound. Meanwhile, the thesis discusses theformation of non-patient V-O compound from grammar, cognitive and pragmatic aspects. Thethesis makes a systematic research on non-patient V-O compound with lots of original ideas.Among them, the formation and analysis of multiple semantic relationship, the influence ofconstruction on the meanings of non-patient V-O compound and its components, theformation of this type of compound are the focus of the research.Apart from the introduction and conclusion, this thesis can be divided into four chapters.In the introduction, this thesis mainly focuses on the significance, methodology,technique and the present situation of the research, as well as the analysis on the concept andthe extent of the V-O compound. At the same time, the thesis researches on the relationshipand the difference between non-patient V-O compound and V-O phrase and V-C compound,also explains the resources and the selection of the materials.Chapterâ… clarifies the concept, the formulation standards and the object's static semanticfeatures of the patient V-O compound at the beginning. On this basis, it defines the concept ofthe non-patient V-O compound, and analyzes its grammatical structure characteristics on thesurface layer, then does the explanation correspondingly. At last it makes the classification for the semantic relationship of the non-patient V-O compound.Chapterâ…¡mainly analyzes the semantic relationship. The non-patient V-O compoundcan be divided in two categories: the single semantic relationship and the multiple semanticrelationship. It specifies the single semantic relationship into ten classes:"V+ tool object","V+ material object","V+ manner object","V+ purpose object", etc. While it specifies themultiple semantic relationship into two classes: the surface multiple semantic relationship andthe deep multiple semantic relationship.Chapterâ…¢includes two parts. The first part analyzes the restrictive function from thegrammar structure to the semantic structure. Because of the restrictive function to the V-Oconstructure, some non-patient V-O compound'object components could express somepatient quality, which is indirect in the semantic way. The indirect patient quality of somenon-patient V-O compound, to some extent, relieves the discrepancy between the form andthe meaning. The second part applies construction grammar theory to discuss the non-patientV-O compound, believing that each type of non-patient V-O compound has thecorrespondence between form and meaning, which can be regarded as a kind of constructionwith independent meaning. Then further discussion goes to the construction effect on themeaning of the compound and components.Chapterâ…£analyzes the formation of non-patient V-O compound from the influence ofthe grammatical, cognitive and pragmatic aspects. Grammatically, rhemization makes theformation of non-patient V-O compound possible; Cognitively, the principle of Prominence inFigure-ground theory plays an important role in the transformation of non-patient object fromnon-essential ones to essential ones, from minor position to major position; Pragmatically ,non-patient V-O compound shows the economy and flexibility of language by expressing themeaning of a complicated structure with a simple form of a compound.The conclusion part is the general summarization of the thesis and the essential ideas.
