This dissertation includes seven case studies of the lexical and grammatical system in Chunqiu Gongyangzhuan.Gongyangzhuan, one of the Confucian Classics, is a valuable text for the study of Classical Chinese language. This dissertation gives a brief survey of the lexical and grammatical system of Gongyangzhuan, on which case researches are based. Lexical case researches include:1.disyllabic compounds.2.literary quotes.3.synonyms.4.dialects. Grammatical case researches include: 1.pronouns.2.prepositions and conjunctions.3.interrogative sentences and interrogative markers. Grounded on the results of language researches, reviews of collation texts including Annotation of Hexiu are made and Dictionary of Gongyangzhuan is compiled.This dissertation represents new academic endeavors in the following aspects:1. A general survey of the language of Gongyangzhuan is made for the first time, providing materials for the study of classical Chinese languages.2. Seven case studies are made, in which new materials and theories are applied:a. In the study of disyllabic compounds, syntactic-structural and cross-structural compounds are researched. The processes and mechanisms of the lexicalization of disyllabic compounds are analyzed.b. Based on the study of the formal and semantic properties of literary quotes, the process, mechanisms and innovations of the lexicalization of literary quotes are discussed.c. Case studies are made of the dialects of Gongyangzhuan.d. The grammaticalization of copulative 'shi' is discussed. The differences between'shi'and other demonstrative pronouns are analyzed.e. The grammaticalization of topic-marker 'fu' is discussed.f. The grammaticalization of modal particle 'yan' is discussed.g. The formal and semantic differences among prepositions 'yu','yu' and 'hu', and their cognitive functions are analyzed.h. The grammaticalization of preposition and conjunction 'yi' is discussed.i. The formal and semantic differences between preposition and conjunction 'ji' and 'yu' are analyzed.j. The formal and semantic differences between interrogative markers 'hewei' and 'heyi', and their lexicalization are discussed.k. The formal and semantic functions of adverbs 'qi' and 'qizhu' are discussed.3. The language in Gongyangzhuan is widely compared with diachronic and synchronic, handed down and unearthed language materials. The synchronic comparison demonstrates the basic language situation in the Warring States and Han Dynasty, while the diachronic comparison offers clues for the origin, development and decay of a certain language phenomenon.4. Modern linguistic theories, particularly Functional Linguistic theories are used to explain classical Chinese language phenomena, so as to get more accurate research result.
