In study of classic and modern film theory, many scholars bypassed the most conceptual issues and replaced them with all kind of other forms such as film esthetics and film history. The transition from epistemology to linguistic analysis has pioneered the film conceptual study and the consequence is film language and semiotics totally substituted for spiritual entities.But both Metz's grande syntagmatique and Echo's tripartite projects met with problems when constructing the underlying system of film. First, they can't define discrete unit precisely and further more, they can't constitute a filmc system, which include all kinds of phenomena about cinema. Second, they can't find the rationale of this semiotic model. Both of them, therefore, can't resolve the problem of cross-language and arbitary between signify and signified. Though object-oriented semiotics model has some advantage in depicting filmic system, we still need to find the rationale behind it.The reflexivity in filmic enunciation and the function of space-time's deixis introduce us onto a cognitive level to realize the film. Cognitive film theorists such as David Bordwell and Noel Carroll consider the form of narrative film as uncompleted and can be fulfilled and improved by audience's behavior, which produces inference. They, therefore, established the theory about cognitive film. But in cognitive film theory, a transcendental scheme research which itself is isolated from human body and language and only used for constructing the literal meaning is simply a static structure and therefore is highly limited, it can not resolve rationale problem of film semiotic model. Here we will introduce embodied cognitive scheme research from George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, remove transcendental concept from scheme research and take the imaginary projection device (such as metaphor and metonymy) into account. Such a film scheme research, which is based upon human body structure, is the origin of embodiment and internal meaning. Thus embodied cognitive schemes combined with unlimited perceptual data turn to be pre-conceptual experience and the pre-conceptual experience turn to be conceptual structure through imaginary projection due to the principle of relevance. The semiotic model based upon conceptual structure will conduct preferential reading according to the principle of priority then at last yield mental representations.The cognitive semiotics of film is so far a relatively mature stage of film theory. The meaning of film from now on is not decided by film text but by audiences who have the necessary knowledge to take part in and construct the meaning of film. Under cognitive semiotics frameworks, film semiotics are combined with conceptual structure closely and become the behavior to resolve filmic problem. Accompany with the development of digital movie and artificial intelligence, these necessary knowledge have the most possibility to be possessed by the computer, then the computer will conduct the model constructing and analyzing for the movie and even act as a digital director.
