The motivation of my research is to better preserve and manage Chinese historic gardens and make tourists better realize the historic, cultural and artistic values in Chinese gardens. According to the need of Chinese historic gardens, I develop an example management plan based on the theory of nonprofit organizational management. I aim to make better use in both human resources and garden architecture facilities in Chineses gardens.I, at first, discuss some necessary global charters, regional charters and one recommendation about the historic and cultural values of historic gardens and the meanings of preservation and management in historic gardens. My intention is to ensure all preservation and management strategy of Chinese historic gardens are under the understanding of their cultural significance.Secondly, three examples worldwide are adapted:Ford Vancouver National Historic Site in the USA, English Heritage Foundation in UK, and Taiwan Lin Family Garden. The management details and success of each organization are good examples for a practical purpose. At last, I develop a thorough management project for a sample garden-Qushuiyuan in Shanghai. This handbook includes:Qushuiyuan's Identity; Mission Statement; the Board; Chief Director and Human Resource; the Construction Chart; Job Description; Departmental Annual Plan; Educational Program; Activity Proposal and Research Goal. Each section contains background information, problem analysis, and recommendations by my personal interview, observation and job experiences in nonprofit world, plus a heart and mind belong to the oriental.Although the nonprofit organization management is regarded by the only method to manage Chinese cultural heritage, discussions are limited to the inspiration, definition, classification, development and policies of Chinese Nonprofit Organization. There is so far no specific handbook about how to practically apply nonprofit management skills in any cultural heritage organizations in China. This research is the first proposal for an inner management construction of a Chinese historic garden and the first experiment to apply nonprofit organizational theory into Chinese historic garden preservation and management. A close up discussion of certain sample garden in order to point out the general management difficulties in Chinese historic gardens is a specific and meaningful method of reserach.
