The Model Calligraphies of the Ta-Kuan Era is a calligraphy treasure of the Song Dynasty. Ever since it came into being, it has long been greatly valued by both collectors and calligraphers of the "Tie" school (learning calligraphy from books of models) for its elegance, rarity and preciousness. In the Qing Dynasty, the "Tie" school and the "Bei" school (learning calligraphy from stone inscriptions) coexisted; even when the "Bei" school was in vogue, appraisal and collection and study of the rubbing notes never stopped. Research on the appraisal and collection of a rubbing note classic in the Qing Dynasty and the accompanying problems is of help not only to the revelation of some hidden facts in history, but also to the analysis of the developmental trend of the appraisal and collection of rubbing note classics in the Qing Dynasty, and to the understanding of the significance of these classics in calligraphy history as well. This thesis, based on sifting and examining the existent versions, historical materials and documents concerned, is a relatively thorough study of the appraisal and collection of The Model Calligraphies of the Ta-Kuan Era in the Qing Dynasty, focusing on such aspects as cataloguing and versions, copies collected and their transmission, appraisal and study, and influence and significance. By tracing the history of the appraisal and collection of The Model Calligraphies of the Ta-Kuan Era in the Qing Dynasty, the thesis analyzes the appraisal and collection concepts of the Qing Dynasty and points out the significance of The Model Calligraphies of the Ta-Kuan Era in both calligraphy appraisal and collection and calligraphy development in the Qing Dynasty.
