The shrine of aI-Ka'bah and Bi'r ZamZam were holy places inPre-IsIamic era, the Prophet Muhammad kept these pIaces' hoIy statusafter the establishment of Islam, and his tomb also became a holy shrine.Shi'a sect made the tomb's of their leaders(lmam) holy pIaces,so didSufis.Sufis played a major roIe in the progress of lsIamisation of CentralAsia and XinJiang region of China,therefore, tombs of sufi saintS becameshrines and the symboIs of Islam.Khwaja Afak,Shaykh(Ieader) of the Naqshbandiyah Brotherhood,under the favour of MonguIs,estabIished a dependent kingdom inKashgharia in 1680's.He was not only a merciful and powerfuI Ieader,butaIso a devoted dervish.He reconciIed his fOrefather's f9miIy resentment,Sufi's doctrine Iead to Iiterature prosperous in his period.Legend has it that 70's members of his famiIy had been burriedunder Afak's mausoleum,30's more people has been identified amongthem.The Iand around his maosoIeum became a burriaI.ground and aspiritual center for Iocal musIim,especiaIIy being a mental treatmentcentre of women.Series construcions aIso erected around the maosoIeum in dif6rrentera.financial basis of the shrine made it a charit8ble institution andeducation center,which channeIing the government funding into sociaIweIfare service,financing the religious institutes.Caret8ker managed thelarge amount of donated lands and properties of shrine,through whichwho became a political figure in IocaI arena.
