Mikhail Bulgakov (1891-1940),a Russian, who lived an uneasy life,is a famous writer and playwright with seemingly unusual creativity. In Introduction,! will begin with a brief interpretation to the illusionary characteristics of Bulgakov's artistic world formed in his novels.lt is actually an llusionary world constituted by his novels, which are characterised with colourful richness both in literary forms and in philosophical thoughts. Then a short introduction will be given to the publishing history of Bulgakov's works and to the international status of studies on Bulgakov. The method of textual analysis is frequently used as a key method in this dissertation, but comparative study with other relevent writers and their relevent works will be made when needed. The first chapter of this dissertation focuses on the analysis in the formal characteristics of Bulgakov's illusionary world, which is constituted of four inherent parts, respectively defined as "illusions in dreams", "absurdity in changes","scientific fiction in reality"and "sound of mythology ".Accordingly, five novels of Bulgakov ("The White Guard", "The Fatal Eggs", "Diaboliad", "The Heart of a Dog","The Master and Margarita")will be analysed textually one by one in this chapter as to expose the representational morphologies of the four suppositive forms listed above. The second chapter intends to explore the inner philosophical meanings of Bulgakov's u illusinary world.lt is divided into two parts. The first part is an analysis in the relevent relationbetween the suppositive forms and Bulgakov's criticism upon reality. In my view, suppositive forms are themselves representative of the critical attitude of Bulgakov to reality.under which Bulgakov could ridicule and criticise the ugliness of the society and the people in this society. The second part is a symbolistic anylysis of Bulgakov's works, stressing that only symbolic reading can reach the works' inner meanings and the author's intentions, which are philosophical thoughts upon the meanings of war, people's responsibilities to nature and socity, people's choices of sprirtual morals, and the future of nation and society. *"The third chapter of this dissertation determines to bring to light the origins of Bulgakov's illusionary world.lt has three inherent parts. The first part is a biographical analysis of Bulgakov's family and his unusual life experience, the formative process of his vivid, humorous, imaginative, and satirical personality. The second part trys to study the influence of Bulgakov's comtemporary writers as well as the absurdity of the reality upon Bulgakov's literary creation. The third part is more historical and comparative, setting itself to date back to the influence of Russian classic writers such as Gogol and Shedrin, and western writers such as Hoffman and Wells upon Bulgakov. The conclusion makes a brief generalization of the artistic characteristics of Bulgakov's world of illusionary novels, illustrates the creativity of his illusionary world, and affirm the charm of his personality and the importance of him in literary history.
