Cross-cultural pragmatics studies how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate with each other in pragmatic sense. This article mainly discusses the research on Chinese-English cross-cultural pragmatics. With Chinese as the foothold and starting point and with language heterogeneity and pragmatics as the theoretical foundation, die author observes and analyses, largely through comparison and contrast, various phenomena and differences between the two languages. He theorizes that the central issue of pragmatics research should be pragmatic meaning, and that, in cross-cultural pragmatics, more special attention should be paid to the construction and comprehension of pragmatic meaning by people from different cultures. This article builds a system of research on cross-cultural pragmatics from three aspects: culture carrier梩he aspect of pragmatic means, culture implication梩he aspect of pragmatic environment, and culture strategy梩he aspect of pragmatic subject. It endeavors to explore the deep cultural intension out of the surface comparison of Chinese and English, to make a scientific and reasonable explanation to the pragmatic differences of people from different cultures, and subsequently, to expose the principles on Chinese-English cross-cultural pragmatics. This article is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction. Chapter Two and Chapter Three, which are regarded as the fundamental aspect, deal with the surface analysis of spoken and written language both in Chinese and English. Chapter Four, the aspect of deep structure, analyses the cultural context of the two languages. Finally, in Chapter Five, which discusses the subjective initiative in Chinese-English cross-cultural pragmatic communication and belongs to the third aspect of cross-cultural pragmatic research, the pragmatic subject is researched.
