This subject-the history of theoretical criticism of the ancient Chinese literature has been set up for a hundred year. Ancient talents and present eminence hare been searching literary works passed down for materials about literary criticism of the times before Qin Dynasty. Being studied in light of their breadth and length, they have been found next to nothing. So if we want to make a great break-through in this realm, we should bread a new ground, taking notice of the materials, which had been ignored by our predecessors, as well as making improvement in the method. Second, to learn of their primary sense of literary types, by detecting the origins of the ancient types of literature, such as:"zhan""Ru""Biao""Ling"(Ming)"Ce" "Zhu" "Cao""Dian",which are uncovered and recorded in the sculptural letters Third, to confirm their clear sense of writing by explaining the words, sentences, and passages in sculptural letters. These three senses are important factors and basis to the artistic thoughts. So we arrive at the conclusion that people in Sang dynasty have vague sense of artistic theology.The second chapter discusses literary theology existing on the coppers' epigraph of the western Zhou Period. In view of the existence of the creative subject, the acceptive subject and the purpose of composing stated by the charters on the epigraph. It's obvious that, during that period, there existed relatively independent literary activities and ideas of literature's capacity created by these activities. Ideas of literature's capacity are embodiedin two ways. First , to disclose the literature's social ability to extol virtues, to record contribution, to advocate obedience to one's parents, such idea goes ahead of the poems' thought of praising, and is the basis of it. Second, to learn of the literature's capability of being recreative and esthetic. Though ,it is still prelim knowledge, it is of great significance. Meanwhile, we get to know that people of the western Zhou period also have a primary knowledge of the literature's expressive quality on looking at the statement on the western zhou coppers' epigraph as a creative subject.The third chapter discusses Confucius' poetical theory by analyzing the waning state Chu bamboo book. Confucius' poetical theory .first the poetical theory stands for the thoughts of Confucius' not zixia's. on one hand, let alone the convincing proof found in drought in Lu state, identifying Confucius with Buli is against the word-saving rule of that time. On the other hand, among the 29 pieces of bamboo slips. Only one records the disciples' quotation of Confucius' remarks when explaining the poetical theoiy. Most of others recorded Confucius' remarks on poems. Second the 29piees of bamboo slips make up one piece of work not two. Independent works. Arranging the order of the bamboo slips should abide by the rule of form first meaning second.
