Putuo mountain in Zhejiang province, Wutai mountain in Shanxi province, Emei mountain in Sichuan province, Jiuhua mountain in Anhui province, are called together the four great Buddhist mountains in China. They all have long history, rich and varied Buddhist Culture. They also have very high prestige in the world.This dissertation bases on a lot of data and my on-the-spot investigation in the four great Buddhist mountains. The main contents of this dissertation are the reasons why Putuo mountain, Wutai mountain, Emei mountain, Jiuhua mountain are respected as the Holy Land of Guanyin Bodhisatrva, Wenshu Bodhisattva, Puxian Bodhisattva, Dizang Bodhisattva; the development of Buddhist culture of the four great Buddhist mountains; the temples, towers, poems and articles, statues, drawing, music, wushu, relation of Buddhism and Taoism and Confucianism, scenery that has rich Buddhist characteristic hi the four great Buddhist mountains, etc. The dissertation also makes an inquiry into the modern meaning of Buddhist culture of the four great Buddhist mountains in aspects of literature, tourism, Buddhists, cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.
