This thesis observes and studies the changes in the narration of the swordsmen popular novels in the 1930s and 1949s, and taking as an example the two works fashionable at time during the Republic of China period-Xiang Kairan's swordsmen popular novel Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen and Gong Baiyu's swordsmen popular novel story of Joint Darters, examines and discusses the evolution of narrative modes.Generally speaking, serial novels pay attention to commercial benefit due to reader's impromptu reaction. Almost all the Chinese swordsmen novels in modern times are serialized in newspapers and magazines. In the introduction, focusing my attention on the three questions of the relationship between China's modern times popular novels and commercial environment, the bookman effect between writers and readers, and the characteristics of popular serial stories, I have examined and discussed the operational mechanisms of popular stories" creation and dissemination. In the main body of the thesis, I observe and study the speech changes from the Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen to the Story of Joint Darters.Xiang Kairan's Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen has carried forward the traditional speech modes of China's ancient times novels in the vernacular Chinese, meanwhile displaying the tendency of pursuing new descriptive styles. By means of the relationships between author and readers, the narrator and the audience in the text, it shows the harmony between old and new descriptive styles. The application of polygonal angles of view is major success of the author in breaking through the traditional narrative modes. And the existence of the "theme" under thecondition of almost having no theme demonstrates the places of fawning on popular taste of the work, but also shows its significance in the science of culture and folklore. The Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen devotes much space to description of a visionary, ultrarealistic world which is suffused with the mysterious atmosphere of witchcraft culture. It's thematic material is drawn from folk legend, privately compiled history, and dramatic stories. It can be seen from this that the author is one of the audience of the original narration; after collecting the thematic material, he adds his own imagination and conceives the story. The disorganization of the narrative structure of the Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen has something to do with this; it is a big structure which is discontinuous, with branches putting out transversely, and yet is given continuity, and this structure is made by connecting the stories disseminated and given out by the original narrator.Gong Baiyu's story of Joint Darters is a realistic novel with romance. The author externalizes the complex experience of inward mind into the wandering, wandering is a reality which has been made concrete. Under such premise, I first examine the conception features of this work: evolving from the "linear type conception" to the "logic type conception" shows its qualitative difference from the Legend of Wandering Remarkable Swordsmen, but has some identification with the "May the Fourth" new novels. Next I examine the relationship between the narrator speech and text audience speech. Thirdly, through observing the communication modes between the author and readers of the text and between the narrator and audience in the text, I explain the positive rote this book plays in the aspects of realizing the synchronization of popular swordsmen novels readers and letting readers now the new descriptive style. When reading swordsmen popular novels such as the Story of Joint Darters, readers have a kind of sense of stability due to traditional speech modes, and their curiosity is aroused due to the speech modes which are different from the tradition at the same time. In a society of intense changes, readers all are full of hopes and yet livein terror and uncertainty; their curiosity implies the desire to look for themselves. Healthy swordsmen popular no...
