The Narrative Study Of Hua YueHen

HuaYueHen, a XiaXie novel created by Wei Xiuren in the Qing Dynasty, is the first novel with prostitutes as main characters in China, and have a high artistic level in the Xiaxie novels of the Qing Dynasty, owing to its ingenious layout, elegant and beautiful language and tragic artistic atmosphere.Based on the theory of narratology, the narrative characteristics of HuaYueHen are studied from the following aspects.First, it’s about the poetic narrative language of HuaYueHen. HuaYueHen is a kind of "Literati-vernacular". The narrative language combining verse and prose has obvious poetic characteristics. The author’s excellent capability of reining narrative prose is mainly embodied in two aspects:the lyrical description of daily life and the poetic description of courtyard’s landscape. The using of narrative verse is more skillful. A large number of poetries interspersed in the novel not only improve the aesthetic implication of the work, but also play a significant role in storytelling.Second, it’s about the image narrative of HuaYueHen. In this chapter, four distinctive and meaningful features of narrative imagery of HuaYueHen are mainly analyzed, which are named:imagery of dreams, imagery of tears, imagery of disease and imagery of brothel. Those features have abundant ideological implication, which not only reflect the author’s emotion, but also advance the narrative process from different aspects.Third, it’s about HuaYueHen’s narrative structure and narrative style. There are double parallel narrative structure in HuaYueHen. And this structure gives the novel some kind of characteristics of polyphonic novel. The double narrative consist of friendship and love structure and is united in the description of passion. The novel is full of dense lyrical atmosphere, forming a "drstressed and erotic" narrative style.Fourth, HuaYueHen’s position in the literary history with respect to the narrative. From the perspective of literature heritage, the HuaYueHen narrative mainly inherited the part of narrative mode of A Dream of Red Mansions and the novels of gifted scholars and beautiful ladies. The inheritance of the narrative means of HuaYueHen from A Dream of Red Mansions mainly reflected in the following four aspects:narrative stratification structure, contrast of positive and negative in narrative, "Fairy" and "tears" narrative mode, pre-narrative with dream, sign the verdict. From the shallow view, the heroines of HuaYueHen are prostitutes and their clients, however they had obvious characteristics of gifted scholars and beautiful ladies in fact. What they encountered is "talented person in distress". HuaYueHen" took an important position in the novels history of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, which had influenced creation manners of the Mandarin Duck Butterfly School writers, Xu Zhenya, Yu Dafu, Zhang Henshui and Guo Moruo in a certain extent.Based on the structuralism combining the criticism and theory of narrative, HuaYueHen’s narrative features were analyzed in multi level, and the unique narrative manner of HuaYueHen was investigated. Further, the inheritance and development of the narrative method of HueYueHen in the novel history was studied.
