Chekhov is one of the Russian writers who have been most frequently introduced and commented in Chinese modern literature. From the writing practice of Chinese modem literature in 30 years, a curving and unceasing clue can be clearly captured and that is the influence of Chekhovian literature on Chinese one; and "Chekhovian" has become a creating mode in Chinese modern and contemporary literature. Many researchers have conducted detailed personal researches concerning facts of concrete influence exerted by Chekhov on Chinese writers. However, there is a shortage of overall and systematic classification and analysis on the mutation of Chekhovian literature in its process of being accepted by modern China and its function when Chinese literature transformed from traditional period to modem one. Therefore, what I concerned about in the paper is the process of Chekhovian literature's dissemination and explanation in China, the influence of this foreign literature on the spiritual features, artistic character and esthetical view of modem literature and the moments of their mutual relation. The theme of my paper is developed on two phases and is divided into seven chapters. On the first phase, with demonstration as its premise, the paper conducted an intermediary translation research, cleared out the historical thread of Chekhovian literature's permeation, dissemination and explanation in modem China and summarized the inner regularity of Chekhovian literature's acceptance by Chinese literature and the construction and evolution of the personal literary concept of Chinese writers and literature researchers when they absorbed the nutrition of foreign literature. The paper is divided into three chapters on this phase:In chapter one inspects various situations concerning the translation and misunderstanding of literature works when Chekhovian literature was firstintroduced in the ending period of Qing Dynasty and the early period of the Republic of China. In Chapter two describes the historical facts concerning the intermediary translation and research of Chekhovian literature in China from 1917 to 1927. During this period, Chekhov is considered by Chinese researchers as one of the foreign writers who have got the biggest realistic writing achievement. In chapter three elaborates the process of Chinese writers' and researchers' acceptance of Chekhovian literature from 1928 to 1949. This is the period of further research concerning intermediary translation and research and Chinese writers gradually began to think highly of the modernistic feature, the perfect artistic form and the profound idea of Chekhovian literature. On the second phase, some methods such as artistic analysis and parallel comparison are adopted to conduct text researches and clarify Chekhov's influence on the creating practice of Chinese literary works. This kind of inspection aims to merely prove neither the Chinese reprint of Chekhovian literature, nor those works with Chekhovian flavor written by Chinese writers. The research of influence on this kind of superficial level is surely indispensable, but it can only serve as the starting point of argumentation. Actually, what is really worthwhile is to inspect the concrete manners and approaches to fuse Chekhovian literature with Chinese writers' creating practice and identify the new literary concept, esthetic principles, artistic spirit and expressive forms brought by Chekhovian literature to Chinese modern literature by comparison, thus demonstrating Chekhovian literature's importance in the process of nationalization of foreign literature and modernization of Chinese tradition itself. This part is divided into the following four chapters:In chapter four, under the direction of "realistic writing of life", discusses in what aspects Chinese writers have used Chekhovian literature for reference and in what aspects they have realized their own creative transformation from three angles of narrative principles, narrative mode and character image etc.In chapter five, starting from the...
