Yu Guangzhong's poetics, the core of which is the relation between tradition and modern, originates from the tension formed by two kinds of factors: the first one is explicit factor, consisting of ancient Chinese tradition and western modem culture; the second one refers to implicit factor, namely the new literary tradition coming from "May Fourth".The system of Yu's poetics is constructed on the base of "Modern Poem". From a given point, it refers to Taiwan poetic writings led by three poetic organizations, Blue Star, Modern, and Genesis, beginning from the 1950s, which was the new phase of the development of Chinese New Poem (xin Shi) after the May Fourth free verses written in the vernacular (bai hua shi). Yu Guangzhong went on a deep exploration on the connotation of "Modern Poem", focusing on ancient Chinese literature and foreign literature so as to transfer it from a pure and special literary definition to a significant poetic domain. Its poetic language is a new kind of language endowed with great charm, basing on the vernacular, blending with occidentalized and classical language. It abounds in images, elegant and cubic, rooting in the modern society, and adopting various modern literary techniques. It is presented in the perfect combination of knowledge and imagination, marked by its comprehensive characteristic. Simultaneously, in pursuit of universal humanity and eternal value, Modern Poem is opposed to the vanity of meaning, and aiming at the bright style, lucid but profound, integral but subtile. It emphasizes on the function of the intellectuality to the creative writing, objecting to the obscurity to the intellectuality caused by sentiment, desire and subconsciousness.Depending on the domain of Modern Poem, Yu Guangzhong probes into the complex relationship between tradition and modern. Not only does he object to conservative attitude towards tradition, but also argues against the radical proposal of thorough occidentalization. On the contrary, he has been in search of taking a mean course. He places his emphasis more on the creative writings combined with Chinese tradition and Taiwan modem poem creation than the studies on the west. Besides the time consciousness of "ancient and modern"(gu jin), he also has the consciousness of "east and west"(dong xi). He claims that Chinese literature should deal with its temporality and, cope with the harmony of our inherent tradition and modern spirit and modern techniques intrinsic in modern western literature, resulting in constructing " beneficial spirit" of our own literature. This new kind of tradition is promising, totally different from doctrine before. Yu Guangzhong once stated that this tradition is the combination of "Chinese Poem's modernization" and "Modern poem's sinolization".This poetic way is called neoclassical poetic way. According to Yu Guangzhong's poetic, "neoclassicalism" can never be understated, which has its own profound and abundant connotation. So it does, tradition and modern represent eternal spirit.Poetic language and poetic style are the two aspects that Yu Guangzhong devotes his most academic energy to. Generally, a poem contains four aspects: language, style, image and implication. Yu Guangzhong regards language and style as the key points of his poetics, which indicates that he attaches much more importance to the process of standardizing poem itself. He has once criticized that those counter-tradition modernists only destroyed but not constructed. He focus on the comparatively stable "substance" lay of poem involves in image and implication, which manifests his consideration about the future of Modern Poem. When successors step into the field of poetic writing, they may obtain the necessary techniques and correct creation ideas. Depending on a quantity of materials and his own creative writings, Yu Guangzhong has made a great achievement in the research of poetic language and style. As to Modern Poem, there is always such a misunderstanding that in language and style, it is different from Classical...
