Recently, Chinese domestic grammatical researchers are importing more and more foreign linguistic theories and research methods; they are paying more and more attention on the combination of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic study when solving the problems of verbs in Chinese Language. Yet, the studies on verbs are still generalized, we can hardly find any multi-point-of-view and description on a certain typical or a special verb. This dissertation aims to study and analyze the diverse and confused moving verb "Guo" as a typical example in modern Chinese Language to make a multi-point-of-view research and analysis as detailed as possible. The study and research on an individual verb is very necessary and valuable, it's paid more and more attention in some foreign countries already, for example, Fillmore had had a special research on the verb of "risk". And, this dissertation on verb "Guo" in Chinese Language is divided into six chapters. In chapter one, we compared the different types of the semantic collocation of the verb and objects in the "Guo+object" structure. We found out that the verb-object collocation is not always invariable. And, we believe there exists a mutual choice between the verb (predict) and noun(object), on one side, the verb can choose different nouns behind it,the noun can also choose different verbs before it. With this viewpoint inmind, it will help us to find out the real semantic features of the verb "Guo" in Chinese Language. Furthermore, the abstraction of the meanings of "Guo" is closely connected with the abstraction of the objects behind it, they supplement each other. Lastly, we found out the objects of "Guo" are mostly substantive nouns; yet, there are also a few morphemes, for example "Guo Yan".In chapter two, we described the semantic web of the verb "Guo" in modern Chinese. In our investigation, several meanings are explicated from its basic (spatial) meaning. In the web we composed, the meanings of "temporal", "passing successfully" and "surpass" are explicated from its basic meaning horizontally, and some other new meanings were explicated vertically. From this web, we can recognize the relationship among the different meanings distinctively. From the vertical point of view, the process of abstraction is also a process of semantic specialization. In chapter three, we analyzed "Guo" from the cognitive point of view. Firstly, some theories and concepts on cognitive linguistics are introduced, secondly, we make use of the method of image-schema to excavate the cognitive springhead of the verb "Guo" in Chinese Language, the metaphor, semantic projection and transformation mechanism of its semantic extending. We also draw a cognitive semantic web of "Guo" which corroborate with the one we had in Chapter Two.In chapter four, the theory and method of Valence Grammar are employed to analyze the syntactic and semantic quality of the verb "Guo". We do this job on different "Guos" based on its 12 meanings. In the end of this chapter, we strengthen our study by the Lexical Grammar Theory. In chapter five, we compared "Guo" in different Chinese dialects. We not only compared dialects with Putonghua(the Standard Chinese), but also compared between different dialects. The most important difference we found out is that the number of meanings of the dialect "Guo" are not necessarily the same, the related lexical is very much different in different dialects and reflect the cultural differences. In chapter six, we compared "Guo" with its English counterpart "pass". In order to excavate the language philosophical essence, we compared "Guo" with "pass" from the angle of language world vision as well as their semantic usage. There are still some deficiency and insufficiency in this study of "Guo". We can't reach every aspect of the matter in our study, especially on ancient Chinese and Chinese dialects. We aim to continue the study and work in the future.
