The Twentieth Century Modernity, Literary Imagination

Trying to get the truth of history means to set up the critique of the historyand reality, as well as to set up the more valuable and more necessary toleranceof it. No critique and understanding, no sympathy within our society, and therereally would be no the freedom and tolerance, if there was no tolerance andforgiveness of the history. The meaning of literature-history would not come about before our eyesautomatically, it needs imagination and explanation. Since the modern-timeand contemporary, the historical experience of people are mainly described byliterature. In modern history, as the pedigree-of-knowledge and symbolized mindand experience of nations, communities and individuals, literature, and itscomplex relationship with the experience of history have constituted themodernity of literature itself. Since it had been one of the most important parts of modern experience ofhuman being, the 20th century China modernity of literature has become theindividualized part of modern experience of human-being, meanwhile, it hasbeen one kind of the realities of the literature-domain and literature-formmodernity. This is the so-called "Worldly-element". "Worldly-element" meansthat Chinese literature, as the practice- form and pluralism-character ofmodernity-dimension of human being, has been the indispensable experientialsubstance. The image of modern nation-state is the key clue. But , even the imageof modern nation-state is only the superficial factor. Through "the 20th centuryChina modern nation-state image", mainly by the great works of Luxun, we wantto get the 20th century China's experience of history of "Nihil, Violence andUtopia", and to search for the possibility of "understanding Chinese historywithin China.". The 20th century China is a product of complicated spirit of era. In theimage of modern nation-state, it came into presence which is the presenceentangled with the past. In general, we draw a conclusion that the 20th centuryChina is the residue of European dream for modernity, but, this kind ofconclusion has been revised by the real history of China itself.
