Erhuaci in Beijing Dialect is a kind of phenomenon appearing in the period of Contemporary Chinese. It is very typical in Erhua phenomenon of modern Northern Dialects. At present, Erhuaci in Beijing Dialect is not only a vocabulary phenomenon, but also can be taken reasonably as a language item in the whole people's language. Through investigation, this dissertation is aimed at making clear the Erhuaci usage of Beijing language community at present time, illustrating that its changes and variation are not coincident, but related to systematic social changes and differences; and seeing thoroughly the users' attitudes towards Erhuaci in Beijing language community, which will be beneficial to understanding the usage of social language in Beijing and the rules of variation and developing tendency.The main subject of this research is Erhuaci used in the language community of Beijing. The research perspective is different from others. In the narrow sense, it is to give a full and three-dimensional examination and review of Beijing Erhuaci, and describe and analyze it from several angles; try to explain the features of Erhuaci, and the variation and adjusting rules of synchronic usage; as well as the exhibition and deep motive in the process of diachronic development. In the broad sense, it is to try to describe the synchronic and diachronic variation and features of Erhuaci in Beijing Dialect fully and systematically, based on the guiding principles of variation theories in sociolinguistics. The contents of this research include the following: the whole features of Erhuaci in Beijing Dialect; the general tendency and main influential elements exhibited in synchronic variation of Erhuaci; the exhibition and motive of diachronic variation of Erhuaci; the adjustment of Erhuaci in the common language surroundings of Han Nationality; the lightening and generalization phenomena of words.This research employs the methods of traditional dialectology and sociolinguistics, based on the description of language facts, to make a sociolinguistic investigation, statistics and analysis of Erhuaci. On the basis of the proceeding studies, and based on the alive language facts, this dissertation is to examine Erhuaci phenomenon from a new perspective and multiple angles, and to see through the preliminary and secondary motives of variation, and argue the qualitativechange in the process of quantitative change--the inner and outer reasons from dialect featuresto stylistic marking.The sociolinguistic investigation is a particular characteristic of this research. It is based on the following to get language material and the choosing attitudes of the users: the recordings of Erhuaci in Beijing Dialect dictionaries; the Erhua variation in part of common names of Beijing place names; the usage of Erhuaci in the major newspapers and the main TV news of Beijing; of Beijing; the usage of Erhuaci in the corpus of Beijing Dialect in the 1980's and in part of the "Beijing Flavor" literary works; the condition of Erhuaci in Beijing citizens' language; the acceptance situation of Beijing citizens towards "obligatory Erhuaci" in Chinese Mandarin.The extending conclusion of this dissertation is the lightening of words. To describe the language variation including the Erhua phenomenon of Beijing Dialect and seek for an appropriate explanation from the angle of word-lightening and word feature generalization, is also the aim the writer tries to arrive at.
