Study On The Thought Of Coast Defence In The Late Qing Dynasty

The thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty was as a result of the communion between Chinese sea sense and west sea sense. It was not a response on the needs of the inner of the society of Qing, but was a passivity answer for the aggression which were launched by west country . The development process of the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty was not only a process which how to deal with the relation about Chinese tradition sea sense and west sea sense, but was a modernization process also. The development process of the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty could be divided into four stage. In this paper, the author has a detailed study in the four stage.Although the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty could not guide the coast defense to successful it had a very important station and value in China history,such as,accelerating the speed of modernization of China;pushing the translation of west books;speeding the foundation of China navy;promoting the educaton of navy;helping the foundation of logistics system of navy and so on. So we should give a positive valuation.However, it was very depressing that north-ocean navy was destroied in JiaWu war. Why the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty could not have a sufficient development? Why it could not finish modernization so that could it instruct the government of late Qing gain victory on coast defence? For answering these question,we must think from a more spacious visual angle. We must have a entirety-thought. When studying on the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty , we must Analyse completely each factor of the society of the late Qing dynasty including political,economy,military,cultural and so on.When to do this,we would find a suddenly bright in front of our eyes. We would had feeled that the head,body, arm and foot of the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty had been haltered by four hoops those were feudal lord absolute monarchy which haltered the foot of the thought of coast defence;small farmer economic which haltered its body;agricultural military constitution which haltered its arm and feudal Confucianist which haltered its head. So, the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty could not freely develop and could not finish modernization.We study history for the purpose of that we can offer lessons for today and future. We could find a theoretical mediation which could been used as a analytic tool.The theoretical mediation just is a paradigm of history research. Saw from the change style theoretical mediation,the social of late Qing and contemporary social were both change style social. So, the peculiarity and law of the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty has a intercommunity for the change style social.We can draw lessons from the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty which include three aspects:First, the social will faced many national and external anfractuosity-antinomiesin the transition-social. When the sea territory was in crisises, it was primary and pressing that the country would learn technique of making vessel and cannon from western. However, in the time of learning western technique of making vessel and cannon, we must innovate our system of politics, economic and military affairs. It must be avoided that the navy played a lone hand.Second, in the age of transition-social, both productivity and economy were very unsubstantial, so we offen choose "port-defending" as our stratagem of coast defence. But the stratagerm of "port-defending" was only a expedient. It would not become the tiptop goal of coast defence for its passivity.Third, in the age of transition-social, the large burden of traditional Confucianism is the biggest obstruction who impeded the reform of the thought of coast defence in the late Qing dynasty.
