A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of Post-War Japan As A Sea Power:Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience And The Making Of A Navy(Chapter 3)

Whether in times of war or peace,studies on military translation are indispensable for the consolidation and maintenance of national security.At present,the domestic research on military translation is still at the initial stage.Doing a good job in military translation not only helps to enrich the content of translation studies,but also is conducive to the military development.This translation project report focuses on the translation practice of Chapter 3 in Post-war Japan as a Sea Power:Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience and the Making of a Navy,which is written by an English professor Alessio Patalano.The author of the project report analyzes some key points and difficulties that she encounters in her translation practice at the level of vocabulary,sentence and discourse,which include the determination of word meaning,translation of proper nouns,translation of long complex sentences and analysis of discourse.In light of the problems above,this project report presents some feasible translation strategies.Context principle and lexical conversion are applied to determine word meaning.As for some proper nouns,the author applies parallel text and adopts transliteration.In regard to the translation of long complex sentence,such translation techniques as restructuring and dividing are utilized.Grammatical and lexical devices are applied to seek for more coherent translation.The author not only expects to improve her translation skills through this translation practice,but also intends to provide reference and help for the future research on military translation.
