Besides The Scholars and Dream of the Red Chamber, another great bookWrong Way Lamp written by Li Lvyuan through 30 years of hard work has alsobeen completed in China at that time of the 18th century. As the firstvernacular and educational saga novel in China's ancient times, it isalso the greatest masterpiece that treats the prodigal's return as itssubject matter. Based on the previous research, this thesis begins withthe definition of 'educational novel', attempting to demonstrate and probeinto the reasons existing in the author's concept with the book's creation,the composition of its text meaning, and the relations between them two.On this basis, it reveals that the meaning of Wrong Way Lamp is not onlyLi's understanding and interpretation of literature, but his judgmentabout education value and his education concept support, thus offeringinsight into its composition of literary and educational meaning, thepurpose of which is to pursue, in the context of humanity reviewing andsocial culture reconstruction, the universality existing in the value ofapplying literary and educational interpretation as references. This thesis develops with the thought track of 'whole-part-whole'.With different emphases, Chapter One(summarizing the previous researchon this topic) and the conclusion (concluding this study), both belongto some research from the whole, and the specific demonstration developsin Chapters Two and Three, the first one making a conclusion about theprevious research, the second one focusing on the times and the author,and the third one the works, then finally the conclusion of the study.Consequently, the dissertation is divided into four parts in structure. Chapter One macroscopically deals with classifying, speculating andclearing up the previous research on Li Lvyuan and Wrong Way Lamp asaccurately and objectively as possible, which is the springboard and standof this thesis. First, it summarizes the research about them in the latelycentury and at the moment; second, it classifies the masterpiece as someeducational novel after considering its definition, its differences fromother novels and its gradual change as a subject matter. As to itsdefinition, there have been some given by previous scholars, whichnevertheless are not strict and standard enough, thus need to be definedmore scientifically and universally in this dissertation. Chapter Two focuses on the era factors resulting in Li's 'moralizingsomeone by novels'. It starts with the economy, culture and social conductof Qing Dynasty'when Kang, Yong and Qian are in power, and after analyzingthe decisive influence of the economical development on the culture andsocial conduct of that time, it concludes that these factors are necessaryfor Li's writing of Wrong Way Lamp. Then, with Li's life stories as itsbasis, this thesis analyzes the influences of the times on the authorand his/her literary creation, and how the author can interact withthe times, and in themeantime from a particular angle, can concern about and find solutions tothe social problems at his will as an educator and a novelist.Furthermore, according to Li's preface to Wrong Way Lamp, it generalizeshis creation concept of 'moralizing someone by novels'. Chapter Three, combined with Li's product under the guidance of 'moralizingsomeone by novels'-the text of Wrong Way Lamp, concentrates on the contentof themasterpiece so as to grasp its moral essence. In addition, the thesisstudies how Li endows his works with the essential content of moralizingand at what extent the novel embodies his creation concept, which aredone from four aspects: Li's education concept, his thoughts abouteducation implementation or practice, the moralizing content and form,and the composition of the overall system of education influence shownin the novel. Here comes the conclusion finally. There exists some historicalnecessity in the formation of Li's creation concept of 'moralizingsomeone by novels'.
