Researching On Wenzhongzi

Wangtong, also called Zhongyan, was born at the Longmen in Hedong County. He taught many students and his students called him Wenzhongzhi after he died. He had written many books in his lifetime, which include Taiping Shi'er Ce, Zhongshuo, and Xu Liujing,etc.. He devoted his life to write Xu Liujing that was composed of Xu Si, Xu Shu, Li Lun, Yue Lun, Yi Zan and Yuan Jing, but there only are Zhong Shuo and Yuan Jing now and others have lost. From the book of Zhong Shuo, we can know the main content of other books.The deed of Wenzhongzhi was not recorded in Sui Shu, the old and new version of Tang Shu, but we can find some records from the other biographies. So many researchers think that there are lots of doubts about Wenzhongzhi and his books. The academic circle has agreed to the authenticity of Wenzhongzhi and his books, therefore, this thesis mainly textually researched, discerned and discussed some problems in the doubts that exiting in the study of Wenzhongzhi.Firstly, I regard the literature of the works and records as a breakthrough point, started my study by analyzing the documents of Tang and Song dynasties, which were nearer from Wenzhongzhi living. It demonstrated the reality of Wenzhongzhi and his books by describing objectively the documents and commentaries that were done by his students, relatives, and other scholars. Secondly, we can draw a conclusion that Zhong Shuo and Yuan Jing are the value of documentics from the booklists of Wenzhongzhi recorded.I reviewed the history of Wenzhongzhi's family from his ancestors to his brothers. We can know the reason that he was fond of the culture of Li and Yue is that his ancestors was born in Zhou dynasty, I drew a clue of the history of his family according to the documents. Scholars have conducted many studies of Wenzhongzhi's brothers, but there still are many disputes. I think he had seven brothers who were the county magistrates of Rui city, any an old brother, Tong, Ning, Ji, any a young brother, Jing. Someone thinks Wenzhongzhi had more than ten brothers. Of course, the number is reasonable if it includes his cousin brothers. It is doubtless that one of his sons named Fushi, but the records of the other two sons are different in the documents. I textually researched and discerned them in the thesis too. For the study onWenzhongzhi's life, I focus on several problems in the years of his birth and death, official career, retirement, etc., hackle, textual research and discern them.Who were his students? This is one of the most divaricated problems and it leads people to challenge the authenticity of Wenzhongzhi and his books. This thesis divided his students into important students, general students and visiting scholars, according to the relation between these students and Wenzhongzhi. By this classifying, it we could know the complicity relation between Wenzhongzhi and his students in that time. So we also solved the question troubled men since Song dynasty why the Sui Shu did not recorde his biography.People think the Yuan Jing came down to us now is a pseudograph which was written by Yuanyi, but I think it is not a pseudograph, according to my literature referring and studying. The important reason that other scholars regarded the Yuan Jing as a pseudograph is the wrong use of taboo in calling name. Taboo in calling name is a very complex problem. Some need not do so, but the latter modified them according to the situation when they collated. Some need do so, but the latter modified them to pristine name. There are lots of examples. So we must consider the complexity of the handing down course and can not pronounce the Yuan Jing is a pseudograph according this. In addition, we can know the Yuan Jing is not a pseudograph by comparing the Yuan Jing with Zhong Shuo.Scholars who studied Wenzhongzhi seldom referred to Xu Liujing. We can know Wenzhongzhi from the existing the Yuan Jing. It is some difficult to study it, because the Yuan Jing is fragment, but we can know the main content of it from the Zhong Shuo.
