As a multidisciplinary professional field rooted in psychology, arts, sociology and philosophy, etc., art therapy rose in America and Europe after the Second World War. Emphasizing the visual symbol or image as the most natural communication way of man's experience, art therapy intends to build up a mutual trust relationship between client and art therapist, and help client achieve harmony and integration of mind and body by means of carrying out various creative activities including drawing, sculpture, etc, and multidimensional interaction surrounded art works. In current China, art therapy develops relative slowly, and there is no systemic research on related theory, and practice in a strict sense as well. In order to clarify confusion and misunderstanding about art therapy in our medical and psychotherapeutic field, drive its growth, and explore a possible new method of mental prevention and health care for school education, this dissertation makes a comprehensive study on art therapy. By the way of analyzing and investigating literatures on art therapy, psychotherapy, art psychology and art education, along with a number of interrelated cases, the dissertation anatomizes connotation and extension, emergence and progress, general treatment courses of art therapy as well as the particularity of child art therapy, and discusses the possibility and validity of implementing art therapy in the school. The dissertation also points out, we can attempt to fuse the idea of art therapy with children's art education when confronted with scarcity or even absence of art therapy resources, put a therapeutic art education aiming at the special children in force and simultaneously make full use of natural adjustment of general art education, thereby helping all the children, exceptional or normal, benefit from art and art education.
