This paper makes a study of Guchui ballads and Hengchui ballads in Yuefu Collection of Poems in the respect of documentology, musicology and literature.The first part is the study of Guchui ballads.Guo Maoqian refutes some opinions of Guchui concepts in Songshu Yuezhi and established his own concepts. He thinks that Guchui is military music or Duanxiaonaoge. Generally speaking, his understanding conforms to historical facts and his definition is of great value.Each dynasty has its imperial Guchui ballads which embodies the evolution of musical forms. Another important reason for its spread is to bestow. However, the way of bestowing varies in different dynasties. By bestowing, Guchui ballads has been spread far and wide.All of the imperial Guchui in Yuefu Collection of Poems show its musical feature. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the literate participate in creating Guchui, thus, it gradually becomes their chanting object. Poets in Tang Dynasty create a large number of Guchui poems which manifests its development.The second part is the study of Hengchui ballads.The definition of Hengchui ballads by Guo Maoqian in Yuefu Collection of Poems is different from others. Instead of referring only to Lianggujiao Hengchui ballads, his definition includes not only Lianggujiao Hengchui ballads but also Beidiyue. Therefore, it contains all of the musical forms of northern national minority.The spread of Hengchui ballads follows two trains: one is big and small Hengchui ballads in Sui and Tang Dynasties, another is Han Hengchui ballads. The record of the names of the former one differs in documents. This paper presents an analysis of the difference and believes that it is caused by separate recording of Jiegu ballads and performing music. According to documents, Han Hengchui ballads have been spread and sung all along without words. There are more and more recording of that period especially in Tang Dynasty.Most of the songs in Hengchui Ballads were composed by scholars into border poems. They were related to each other. As for musical form, the military feature of Hengchui Ballads decided the themes of border.
