Huang Sheng (1622-1696) bequeathed to his descendants a great cultural heritage. As the model of scholars in the area of Huizhou during the transition from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, Huang Sheng profoundly impacted the culture and academic ideas in history. What is praiseworthy and amazing is his eventful life, utmost efforts and clinging pursuing spirit. The collection of his poems and his other works are unique among the ancient works and records of the area in that the then chaotic conditions of social life are perceivable in his works. The exceptional research model that he sets in his Annotations and Comments on Du Fu's Poems is praised highly by scholars after him, and it serves as a link between the past and future study of Du Fu's poems with far-reaching significance.The first part of the present paper endeavors to derive its understanding of Huan Sheng and his times from the resources further explored, the first-hand resources elaborately examined and all the available findings of Huang Sheng's extraction, life story, circle of friends and works. The second part is a case study of Annotations and Comments on Du Fu's Poems, which is surveyed within the regional culture in Huizhou area, in combination with Huang Sheng's poetic theories, and along the development of poetic theories on Du Fu's poems.The first part is composed of three chapters. The first chapter is the Investigation of Huan Sheng's Extraction and Life Story. Based on the findings of predecessors, it replenishes them and focuses on the exploration of the role played by his family tradition, living conditions, and life in shaping his academic thinking. The first section is Huang Sheng's Extraction. It illustrates that it is just the nourishment in the area of Huizhou. the edification of the tradition set by the Confucian school of idealists' philosophy of the Song and Ming Dynasties, and the influence of his family and the common practice of society that give birth to such an outstanding scholar, poet and artist as Huang Sheng.
