This dissertation is meant to make a systematic inquiry into the critical thoughts of black feminist criticism in America. As the representative of the Third World feminist criticism, black feminist criticism in America has become an indispensable part in contemporary Western feminism. In the conflicting debate between black feminists and white feminists, black feminist criticism enables feminist critics to make a reexamination on such issues as race and class. With other Third World feminist criticism, black feminist criticism has brought great change in contemporary feminist criticism.Black feminist criticism has revised the paradigms of different research realms, and it has made great contribution to the theoretical process of gendering African-American studies and coloring feminist studies. What is more, it has brought the concept of multiple and simultaneous oppressions of race, class and sex to the dominant discourse. This shifted paradigm has not only enabled black feminist criticism to utter its own voice as an independent voice, but also promoted the development of contemporary feminist criticism and African-American literary criticism. Additionally, it has exerted great influence on the construction of the literary criticism of other Third World women.Black feminist criticism is a product of the Civil Rights Movement and contemporary Feminist Movement of the 1960s.
