Mr. Meng Wentong is an unmatched master of Sinology in 20th Century China. He had a thorough knowledge of study of Confucian classics and Chinese history, went back to origins of Sinology, especially Shu Culture, and achieved mastery through a comprehensive study of Chinese and western learning. Thus he has great attainments and innovative contributions in many academic fields. Moreover he was familiar with Buddhism classics, explained the metaphysics school, one sect of ancient Taoism, and pointed out that Taoist school of Xian Qin was divided into the Southern and Northern schools. These researches formed the epoch-making achievements in Taoism study.Though someone already has paid attention to the Mr. Meng's academic achievements, the systematic study on Mr. Meng's thoughts about Taoism seems insufficient. Sichuan is Mr. Meng's hometown, where also is the cradle of Taoism as well as the important place for Taoism study. Mr. Meng, as a voluntary successor of Shu culture, explored a new developing realm for Shu culture with his academic style of learning the development and change by intensive knowledge and academic achievements by exposing origin, discriminating details and adopting the textual research.
