Seeking Order

Liang Shu-ming is a distinctive thinker in the Chinese history of modern thought. His thoughts cover a wide range concerning the politics, culture, philosophy, society, psychology and religion, etc. He suffers from much misunderstanding and criticism during his whole life. He is considered as an obstacle of the New Culture Movement and meets with the criticism of the new clique because he wants to speak for Confucians during the period of the May Fourth. In the 30th, he is seen as against the industrialization and the Communist Party's returning to the ancient movement because he devotes himself to the construction of the country. In the 40th, to seek the peace and resist the Japan, he tries his best to mediate between the Communist Party and Kuomintang as an important political member of the third party. But because Jiang Jie Shi's peaceful farce, this attempt fails. So Liang Shu-ming offends these two parties. At the same time, he is once considered as an objector of the constitutional government movement because he shows little interest in the constitutionalist which is clamored by the Kuomintang. In the 50th, he encounters a series of criticisms because of the fierce debating with Mao Zedong on the issue of the farmers. During the period of the Cultural Revolution and he persists in saying that"Armed forces may be deprived of the commander, but ordinary man should not be seized of will"when he is criticized for his support of Confucius. After the Cultural Revolution, he participates in the Chinese People's Political Consultation and constitution work and calls for monocracy. Since the cultural fever in the 80th, especially the introduction of the Gay Allito"the last Confucian", Liang Shu-ming and his thoughts shows great vitality.
