As a form of poetic criticism, poetic notes emerged in Song Dynasty in a narrow sense. Its emergence is the necessity for poetry booming in ancient China and product of interaction of poem creating and poetic criticism in specific historical and cultural backgrounds of Song Dynasty. With appearance of the earliest version of poetic notes Poetic Notes Taken by Ou Yangxiu ( 《å…一诗è¯ã€‹),a large number of anthologies concerning this form of poetic criticism have sprung up like mushroom. Moreover, these anthologies are mainly monographs focusing on poetic criticism instead of informal essays focusing on chronicles. Consequently, poetic notes obtain independent position in the criticism domain of literature theories. However, separate collections of poetic notes have advantage of holding distinctive perspectives of theoretical criticism, their respective remarks cannot present a whole picture of the history of poetry and its present situation. Hence, it is essential to make summaries and introspection of poetic notes in specific time before specialized, systematic and theoretical monographs pertaining to this form are produced. This task means a lot to sound development of poetic criticism as well as poetry creation. It is under such circumstance that Hu Zai's Series of Poetic Notes Taken by the Recluse of the Brook Tiao (《苕溪渔éšä¸›è¯ã€‹) came out after twenty years' arduous collection and modification. Unfortunately, most former studies regard this anthology merely as a document database and attach much importance to its literature rather than the poetic tendency suggested by its layout patterns, that is, giving first place to selections and combining selections with comments. So the orientation of this dissertation is to make a further study on Hu Zai's personality and his works, thus revealing its significance in terms of literature history and poetic criticism, which will surely exert profound influence on latter research concerning the history of poetry and that of poetic criticism.This dissertation is composed of three parts, that is, Hu Zai's personality and compilation of the anthology, his historically poetic views and his views on poetic criticism.
