From linguistic philosophy, thinking pattern and dialectical thought, the dissertation makes a more comprehensively contrastive study on parataxis and hypotaxis in Chinese and English on the level of word, sentence and text. The whole dissertation is made up of nine chapters, the main idea of each as follows.Based on previous studies, Chapter One presents the definition of parataxis and hypotaxis for the dissertation, defines its aim, main points and significance.Chapter Two gives a more detailed description of the achievements so as to have a clear idea of shortcoming in the field and better improve the relevant research here.Chapter Three takes a philosophical thinking of the methodology of paratactic and hypotactical research from structure boundary rule, metabolic rule, and rule of economical difference presentation, and analyzes the research field from three pairs of methodological category including diachronic and synchronic, explicitness and implicitness, commonness and individuality. On the basis of the discussion, the author believes that contrastive analysis is only option and agrees with linguistic dialectics.Chapter Four makes a contrastive analysis on the linguistic philosophy in the Chinese pre-Qin period and western classic linguistic philosophy and discusses the different thinking patterns of the Chinese and western people: wholeness and individuality, comprehension and rationality, concreteness and abstractness, and their relation with parataxis and hypotaxis. The chapter also probes into the classic Chinese and English, finding that there are paratactic ideas in the ancient Chinese commentary and morphological studies and there exists the modern hypotactic study in the ancient Latin and Greek language studies. The English language is greatly influenced by ancient European languages, thus hypotaxis should be naturally its basic feature.Chapter Five makes a contrastive study of words and expressions in Chinese and English.
