As the most distinctive feature of English and Chinese, study on hypotaxis and parataxis has always been an important topic for discussion. Based on the C-E translation of A Brief Introduction to Main Attractions in Shanghai and daily E-C translation, this thesis discusses the translating strategies for transferring from parataxis to hypotaxis in C-E translation and hypotaxis to parataxis in E-C translation.Besides the introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into three parts. The first part elaborates on the expressive characteristics of parataxis in Chinese and hypotaxis in English. The following chapter analyzes the influence hypotaxis and parataxis exerts on translation from the aspects of cohesive devices, logical expression and sentence formation. From the angle of cohesive devices, most of Chinese sentences are connected by inner covert relations between sentences, while English sentences are mostly connected by abundant cohesive devices; as for logical expression, Chinese sentences usually follow the fixed logical and sequence order, while the elements in English sentences, unrestricted by time sequence, are arranged without limitation to word order. As for sentence structure, Chinese sentences tend to be short while English sentences tend to be long and complicated. The last part of this thesis focuses on effective translation strategies for transferring from parataxis to hypotaxis in C-E translation and from hypotaxis to parataxis in E-C translation through three aspects:dominant or hidden cohesive devices, usage of verbs or nouns and particles and re-organization of sentences.
