This dissertation is a subject study of the Khalil Gibran' s literary works in the occidental context. Gibran is an Arabian painter and writer residing U.S.A at the turn of the 20th century. His literary creation enjoys a high reputation in the world, and his famous work prophet has been translated into twenty languages as well as the most widely read book of the 20th century except for Bible. But compared to the flourishing of its translation or reception , the study on Gibran has been overlooked in China and America. Furthermore, there presents apparent one-sided in the existing achievements on Gibran' s study. Firstly,Gibran spends most of his life in America since he went there in twelve years old and maintains close ties with contemporary western cultural circles. Secondly,Gibran' s mature literary works in his later stage are written in English and since his first English Work Madman published ,his Literary works had been noticed widely in the American literary world. In the middle of the Depression, the largest sale of the prophet even led to a debate in American publishing world. Thirdly,the subject transfer from "oriental writing" to "life writing" has an inherent relation with the occidental context .So, the occidental context is a necessary view of point to study Gibran' s literary works.
