The subject of this thesis aims at the comparative research of the maincharacteristics of the modality of print between China and western coun-tries during the time before the 20th century. It is carried out from thefollowing three aspects: the medium of print, the expression language ofpainting and the technique language of printing. According to this thesis,the main modality characteristics of Chinese ancient prints are summariz-ed as the fragrant ink, the exquisite picture and the good paper, whilethe main modality characteristics of the western ancient prints and themodern prints are the image, texture and the trace of printing. Moreover,this thesis also points out that the modality differences between Chinaand western countries are owing to the differences of social culturefunction of print, the differences of painting language, the differences ofprinting technology and the different cultural status of artists.
