A Study On The Combination Of Degree Adverb In Mandarin Chinese

The category on the degree in mandarin Chinese is a key one in the Chinese semantic category system. To some degree, what degree category study is to classify the context of the degree category by their forms and meanings according to the rules that degree adverbs distributes. Based on this knowledge, this essay focus on the degree category and the role it plays in the combination of the main words. In a word, the contents of this paper can be shown in the following three ways.(1) This essay tries to break through the previous studies on the degree adverb in the research method and research object on the base of the contribution of the degree adverbs. The article tries to look at this problem in the double perspectives instead of the single one. That means we not only focus on the degree adverbs, but also the combination of the degree adverbs with other words. We pay some attention to the new development of degree adverbs in the past few years, such as the enlargement of the insiders and the spread of its capability of combining.(2) This essay tries to discuss the degree category and its classification systematically and fully. The degree category, whether it is the relative one or the absolute one, are all based on the comparison. Thus we classify the degree adverb in the mandarin into three kinds, such as original comparison degree adverbs, individual comparison degree adverbs and extensive comparison degree adverbs.(3) This essay also studies thoroughly the three kinds of combinations, such as combinations of degree adverbs with adjectives, with the verbs, and with the nouns respectively.First, the degree adverbs combine with the adjectives. This paper analyses the combination of degree adverb with both the quality adjective and state adjective respectively, and also states the change on the degree of the combination meaning. What's more, the analysis is put on not only the change happened when degree adverbs modify quality adjectives, but also the new expression that state adjective such as "xüebai" combines with degree adverbs in a dynamic point of view.Secondly, the degree adverbs combine with both the verbs and verb-like structures. All the verbs that can be modified by the degree adverb "hen" in the Chinese Verb Dictionary are reassessed based on the previous studies, and these verbs are classified into degree verb, psychology verb, degree-like verb and degree phase according to their semantic and syntactic features. An obvious breakthrough is made in terms of scope, depth and classification of the observation comparing with the previous studies.Finally, the degree adverbs combine with the nouns. We re-explain the combination of degree adverb with noun according to the principle of bi-directional selection on the meanings. Besides the awakening mechanism of the meaning characteristics, we analyze the semantic direction of the degree adverb, and put forward specific direction of the meaning as a new kind of the semantic direction, including leaning method, inside method, partial method, depth method and outside method according to the characteristics of the state adjective.
