Degree is the hierarchical relationship among the members of a certain category. This hierarchicalrelationship, if demonstrated by adjectives, the natural difference of matters and their semantic diversitymight be reflected. As an objective form existing in the world, degree can be perceived by people and expressed withcertain linguistic forms. This explains why Chinese, which lacks inflections in the narrow sense, can alsoexpress different degrees. The present paper studies the degree of a monosyllabic adjective hao. I describe the degree it candemonstrate when modified by adverbs of degree or appearing in overt comparative sentences. Startingfrom this point, I study systematically the degree of adjectives cross-linguistically.Quantifier is main plot the present discussion. Cross-linguistically, quantifiers can be expressed bydifferent linguistic forms, most frequently adverbs of degree, numbers (classifiers), etc.. Therefore, aprecise study of quantifiers is essential and enables us to better understand the roles that those hierarchicaldegree elements play in a language and their features shown in syntax and semantics. The different degreeof the adjective hao can be better understood through comparison of the grammatical meaning of the‘attribute’ and ‘quantified degree’ shown by the adjective hao and discussion of their differences. Thedistributive features of the quantification of hao, can help further explain linguistic phenomena related toadjectives, for example, the combination of the quantitative study of adjectives and semantic study canclarify the marking for adjectives as attributives or adverbials, the semantic features of adjectives, andmeasures for expressing subjectivity of speakers. The quantitative features of adjective can ensure therespective independent status of adjectives and adverbs of degree. The discussion also involves scale, scopeand marking of degree. On the basis of previous studies, the present study has put forward its own view as well asargumentation. With sufficient language facts and linguistic phenomena, we have discussed the necessityand applicability. The study of adjective degree has also widened the semantic study and enriched thecognitive linguistics. This is significant for the construction of theoretical of linguistics.
