Synonymies of the old Chinese, which started in the 1960s, have now achieved a lot. Having Synonymies in Shi Ji by Professor Chi Chang-hai as a milestone, we divide the study into two periods: It mainly dealt with the differentiation of synonymies for the purpose of schooling during the former period; and then turned to certain books as a branch of lexicology which made Chinese lexical history a useful base. Through describing the synonymies systematically, the linguists have made the lexical semantic relationships of a book clearly understood. But they only laid emphasis on old Chinese and single-syllabic synonymies, leaving Middle Chinese, Recent Chinese and multi-syllabic synonymies slightly noticed, which is deficient in Chinese lexical history.Wei Shu is an essential definitely-dated historic book in the Middle Times, with a good many of broad vocabulary. However, the linguists paid so little attention to it that we now still have no systematic studies . Here we have studied more than 130 groups of multi-syllabic synonymies of nouns, verbs and adjectives, in order to find the characteristics of Middle Chinese, and discussed some methods and theories. We here have two volumes, with a general description in 5 chapters as Volume I.In Chapter I, we have stated the characteristics and efficiency of today's old Chinese multi-syllabic synonymies, and the necessity in two aspects: "the continual, inheritable lexical development" and "multi-syllables are the most important in Chinese vocabulary". Then we have3 principles ------Parallelism, context-tested and lexeme-interpreting in Chapter II, discussingtheir lexicological content and applications. Next, we have briefly discussed the nature of the linguistic materials of Wei Shu, and its value, edition, etc. Showing our methods of "the combination of synchronic and diachronic studies" and "the combination of speech and language", we persist that synonymies have the same meaning. In Chapter IV, we discussed the study value of multi-syllabic synonymies in Wei Shu in 3 aspects: lexicography, origin of the study and how to make a further study. In the last chapter, we summarized the characteristics of multi-syllables and synonymies in Wei Shu. We obtained two types of synonymies in semantics and form, according to lexemes and structural relationships. And then we concerned the origins of multi-syllabic synonymies from old words and new words.Volume II consists of 3 chapters of examples. We have studied multi-syllabic synonymies of nouns in Chapter I, multi-syllabic synonymies of verbs in Chapter II and multi-syllabic synonymies of adjectives in Chapter III. Through the examples, we are able to view the multi-syllabic synonymies of Wei Shu objectively, and then we can discuss the methods and principles of the multi-syllabic synonymies accordingly. Our study is mainly about the members of old words, new words and new meanings, not for the differentiation, but for the preparation of the diachronic study later. The multi-syllables we concerned here, are mainly bi-syllables.
