Book of Chen Dynasty by Yao Cha and his son Yao Si Lian of early Tang Dynasty is a history of Chen Dynasty which lasts for 33 years. Existing researches mostly focus on the collation and variorum, the results of which are quite ample. But only a few are devoted to the study of its language and diction. This essay initiates a research on the multi-syllables in the book. It goes in two parts.Section one is a detailed description of the structure of multi-syllables in Book of Chen Dynasty. The multi-syllables can be divided into two genres: pure multi-syllables and compound multi-syllables. The first is outnumbered by the second, two thirds of which are of binding structure and modifial structure. To look into the nature of the phonemes in compound multi-syllables is to see the relationship between the structure and the meaning.Section two adopts synchronic and diachronic view of both the new words and new meaning of the multi-syllables in Book of Chen Dynasty. It focuses on words and their meaning firstly used in Book of Chen Dynasty, or occasionally used in books a little earlier and often used in Book of Chen Dynasty or books of the same period. For the words exclusively used by Book of Chen Dynasty, I first analyze the meaning of the phoneme and explain the rational of the combination. Similar multi-syllables are used exemplify the findings.
