A comprehensive study on vocabulary of the Tales of marvels in Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties, in the perspective of synonyms is conducted in this thesis, which is categorized into six chapters:In the first chapter, the following contents are introduced: a general review of the peer research on the language of the Tales of marvels in Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties; a review of synonym studies; the origin of this study; the focus of study in this thesis; and the methodology of the study.In the second chapter, the value of studying the Tales of marvels of Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties is illustrated. Although synonyms in Tales of marvels is only a fraction of the mediaeval times language, it does reflect the features of the latter, for the simply reason that it originated from writings with high appearance of spoken language. Moreover, when comparing the these synonyms at this age with those at ancient times, some evolutionary changes can be traced in terms of vocabulary system itself.Based on the features of the language of the Tales of marvels in Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties, a corresponding rule is generated to judge the synonyms in the third chapter. Since mediaeval Chinese language is significantly different from that of ancient time, let alone modern Chinese language, we should not apply the traditional method of judging synonyms in the domain of mediaeval literature Rather, a new method is to be generated based on its unique features. In our practice, we employ methods generated from contexts, variants and the illustrations of literature as our effective solutions.The origin of the synonyms of the Tales of marvels in Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties is analyzed in the fourth chapter. The large part of the members in the synonyms follows the ancient time Chinese. Some new meanings, however, are added to these words. In addition, attention should be drawn to the fact that it also absorbed dialect words and Buddhism vocabulary, which have such a strong root that many of them last to today.The evolving path of evolution of acceptation is induced from the angle of synonyms in the fifth chapter, which actually follows closely the last chapter, in a sense that some issues concerning the evolution of acceptation can be addressed with the assistance of some regular pattern generated from the study of synonyms.The sixth chapter focuses the evolution of synonyms in the Tales of marvels of Wei-jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties. In this chapter, we attempt to integrate theories of modern linguistics with the study of synonyms. The evolving trend of the vocabulary system is demonstrated by studying the changes taking place within the members of synonyms and between groups of synonyms.
