Studies On The Vocabulary Of The Tales Of Marvels In Wei-Jin And The Northern And Southern Dynasties

The period of Wei-Jin, the Northern and Southern Dynasties is the crucial period of the vocabulary of Chinese from archaic Chinese to Medieval Chinese. In that moment, the vocabulary of Chinese had taken huge changes in the forms of words, the system of sense and word-formation methods. The literary sketches were the one of the main materials that represented the basic features of the Chinese in that time, and as one integrant of the literary sketches, Tales of Marvels have prominent characteristic in the vocabulary. But the materials of Tales of Marvels are very scattered and have many mistakes, and the researchers are very few.At that time, there were many new words sprang up. The new common word was replacing the old one. Disyllabic words increased enormously. The vocabulary of Buddhist scripture became into real Chinese had made the changes of the system of vocabulary. On the other hand, many words in the pre-Qin had emerged many new meanings and new functions; the system of the meaning of words and phrases had also been different from that of pre-Qin. As the mass emerging of new words, the disyllabic word-formation methods had added more forms, all these led to the change of the basic features of vocabulary.The changes of monosyllable can cause the changes of the system of monosyllabic words, which is the main reason that led the vocabulary became polysyllable. The change of the system of monosyllable includes the change of the system of synonym and antonym.
