Su Shi, Huang Ting-jian , Mi Fu and Cai Xiang are the most famous four calligraphists in North Sung while they make great achievements in poetry. Their poetry thoughts are closely related to those of calligraphy. This dissertation makes comparative research on their theories of poetry and calligraphy in order to hold an overall understanding of their literature ideology.Su Shi puts forward the calligraphy idea of Shang yi and applies it into poetry and calligraphy creations. He pays great attention to the feeling of heart and pursues Zi ran in literature creations. He also attaches much importance to the relation etween inheritance and innovation while emphasizes Tian gong. Huang zhou han shi tie is Su's most representative work of calligraphy and his poems concerning calligraphy are also valuable.Huang Ting-jian pays attention to the communication of poetry thoughts and calligraphy theories. With Mian su as his key idea, Huang Ting-jian keeps Yun as the aesthetical criterion and pursues Zhuo in the form. Through the deliberation of language and emulation of painting, Huang Ting-jian tries to express the spiritual similarity and realize his dream of Zi cheng yi jia. The poems and the calligraphy creations of his late years are complimentary to each other.The expression of personality is Mi Fu's key idea, which is manifested in his poetry. He also emphasizes learning from the ancients. In the domain of poetry, he appreciates the works of Tang Dynasty and the naturalness of those poems. While in the area of calligraphy, he sets the works of Jin Dynasty as an example and tries to express his sincerity.It is the inheritance and retuning to the ancients that comprises Cai Xiang's predominant thoughts. He emphasizes the importance of the inner spirit and advocates to learn from the excellent production of others.Those four people make great innovations during the process of learning from each other. It is the comparative research on their literature thoughts that will bring a new era to the literature history.
