Yang Shuda's Exegetical Studies carry forward the good traditions from Duan Yucai, Wang Niansun in Qianjia Period Qing Dynasty, benefit from contemporary scholars and his country worthy, being influenced by the western Etymology. Yang achieves great success in Exegetical Studies and is called 'No.1 in Exegetics at that time in China', the researches on Yang's Exegetics,however, are unsatisfactory. This thesis researches Yang's Exegetical Studies systematically and deeply for the first time, trying to illustrate the characteristics of Yang's Exegetics and provide useful references in theoretical and methodological sense for the Exegetical Studies of our age.Views including relations between the form and the meaning of Chinese Characters,the sound and the meaning of Chinese Characters,and those of semantics,with the exegetical applications of these views, constitutes the principle parts of the dissertation. Bringing grammar and rhetoric to exegetical studies is the outstanding characteristics of Yang's Exegetics. Compared to Zhang Taiyan,Shen Jianshi and Huang Kan, Yang's exegetical studies have the common feature of the epoch and his own individuality. This thesis also illustrates the applications of Yang's Exegetics in three aspects: collation of ancient books, compilation of dictionaries and study of literature and history. The last chapter of the dissertation summarizes briefly Yang's exegetical achievements in five ways, points out the exegetical defects from a macroscopic viewpoint and a microcosmic viewpoint respectively.The dissertation has 9 parts and there are about 190,000 words in the all.
