The first chapter gives an account of the cultural background within which The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan was published, and describes the state of book engraving and artistic publishing in Ming and Qing Jiangnan. It traces The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan and its printing technology back to its origins in the Ming tradition of chromatic wood block printing, engraving, and production of painting manuals. The second chapter investigates the origins of the first collection (vol.Ⅰ) of The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan. It compares several editions and corrects mistakes made by Guyuan Hongshen, Qiu Kaiming and others. It concludes that the volume held in the Shanghai Library collection is the true first edition. It traces the publishers of subsequent wood-block editions as well as the Chao Xun lithographic edition, and concludes with summary account of all editions of The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan. The third chapter considers the origins of The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan (vol.Ⅰ) text and illustrations, and casts doubt on Guyuan Hongshen's theory that most of the first volume illustrations were copied from Taiping Shanshui Tu. The fourth chapter appraises foreign research and commentary on The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan. It analyzes overseas research and indicates its strengths and weaknesses. It considers the views of overseas researchers regarding the merits and value of The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan, and suggests areas and lines of enquiry for future research. The last chapter examines the influence of The Chieh Tzu Yüan Hua Chuan in China and Japan especially its influence on painters, fine art education, wood-block printing and so on.
