In the history of National Studies in Modern China, the status of Ku Chieh-kang can’t be ignored. Mr. Ku proposed two important theories, the 1st was Xia, Shang, Zhou was not came from one ethnic group and the 2nd was Chinese nation is a whole. Both of them caused inestimable impact in the academia and political circles at that time. There already have some research results about the two theories. However, most of the previous results focused on the second theory, but ignored the first theory. About the second theory, most attention had been paid to the controversy caused by the theory, but not the theory itself. Therefore, it is necessary to re-exam Ku Chieh-kang’s national study from the perspective of academic history and in the form of thematic studies. The first theory was put forward in 1920s, it said that, Xia, Shang, Zhou was not come from one ethnic group, they were not came from Yellow Emperor. Ku Chieh-kang was able to put forward to this theory, not only because his study was established on the previous results, but because he used the historical method in modern times. The theory was not only an important thesis of Antiquity Doubt School, but also caused inestimable impact on the school of approve antiquity, archaeology and explain antiquity. The second theory was put forward in 1930s. It said that, After Qing and Han dynasty, Chinese nation is a whole. Ku Chieh-kang could put forward to the theory, not only because he had got some inspiration from former people’s national discourse, but because of the method combined books reading with field survey. The theory established on historical and realistic basis. The publish of the article caused an controversy about Chinese nation is a whole or not. It was also concerned by politics. Chinese nation is the whole became a widespread belief of Chinese people. From the first theory to the second. Ku Chieh-kang’s view on the national question had no fundamental changes. But we found some detail changes in it. The focus of Ku Chieh-kang’s thoughts and the meaning of Nation changed.
