The goal of this study is to discuss the cultural meaning and aesthetic value of Chinese contemporary independent film by researching the cause, process and expression of independent films. As Chinese film is becoming marketable, domestic and international cultural trade is increasing, With reference to the international independent film marketing system, and the evolving Chinese film industry, this thesis explain how Chinese independent film will become an necessary and important part of the Chinese film industry.The subject of this research is the independent film in mainland China after 1990s, According to the realities of different understandings and definitions of independent film during the history, Chinese independent film was born and developed with special Chinese characteristics, and shows different cultural meaning and aesthetic characteristics in different historical periods. It has been a necessary and important component of Chinese film, in many aspects such as social culture type, people's cultural life, developing of film aesthetics and participating in the present day Chinese social transformations. At the same time, from the perspective of independent film filmmakers, Chinese film management and censorship system, and Chinese film market, this thesis analyzes the main problems that the development of China independent film faces and proposes how to solve these problems.Referencing the relatively ripe situation of independent film market represented by U.S.A., France and South Korea, through analyzing the financing, distribution of independent film and the relevant film policies, this thesis proposes the feasibility of building art house cinemas in China, and emphasizes the importance of the marketization of Chinese independent film.
