This essay studies the effort for ethnical tastes of the Yanan xylography during the ChineseAnti-Japanese War. The paper explores the causes of the ethnical tendency of the Yananxylography and makes an artistical study of the Yanan xylographs. It concludes that theethnical trend of the Yanan xylographs is the harvest of the graphic workers Who plungedthemselves into the heated grass-root life, kept a close contact with peasants of North Chinaand used regional folk fine arts of the Loess Plateau culture for their reference. Thesepursuits of ethnical features of arts on the basis of integrating themselves with the broadmasses of people played an important role in bringing the historical change of the late 1930saesthetic move from head-on imitation of the West to the gradual recognition of theethnical art tradition, and exerted great influence to arts until the late 20th century. The ethnical pursuit of Yanan xylographs, together with their novel features tinged with thetimes, will play an active role of revelation in the future development of Chinese arts in the21st century.
