Wu Deng Hui Yuan, compiled and edited by anonymous monks headed by Hui Ming of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, is a very important historical book in Lamp Records style on the Chan (Zen) School of Buddhism. This volume is given a unique status in the ancient history of Zen and had great influence in contemporary Southern Song and of later ages, leading to the emergence of several important Lamp Records. Regrettably, up to date, there has yet been focused research study of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan". This paper is a preliminary exploration of the conception of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and other relative issues.This dissertation consists of ten chapters. The first chapter, being the preface of this dissertation, is composed of two sections. The first section is a diachronic outline of the research history on "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" from the Song Dynasty to the present. I will examine the inadequacies of the research on "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" in former dynasties and lessons learned which will serve as a guideline for this paper. The second section outlines my research methodology and plans.The second chapter is the research on the author, the composition process and the different editions of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan". Hence, this chapter is separated into three sections. Firstly, the issues pertaining to the life and background of the compilers of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" will be discussed, especially that of Sheng Jingming, Hui Ming, Dachuan Puji, and Lu Dusi. Secondly, I study the composition process of several offprints and editions collected in Tibetan Tripitaka from the "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" printed in Song Dynasty to the edition of "Xu Tripitaka". The third section is the research on the different editions of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" in and after Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasty.The third chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and "Jingde (era) Record of the Transmission of the Lamp", focusing on the collections and records from "Jingde (era) Record of the Transmission of the Lamp". Following the structure of chapters 3, subsequent chapters until chapter 7, "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" will be compared with several prominent literatures in Lamp record style. The method and criteria for these historical methods of literature collection and record will subsequently be assessed and evaluated.The forth chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and "Tian Sheng Guang Record of the Transmission of the Lamp", focusing on the collections and records from "Tian Sheng Guang Record of the Transmission of the Lamp". The fifth chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and "Jian Zhong Jing Guo Xu Lamp Record", focusing on the collections and records from "Jian Zhong Jing Guo Xu Lamp Record".The sixth chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and "Lian Deng Hui Yao", focusing on the collections and records from "Lian Deng Hui Yao".The seventh chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and "Jia Tai Pu Lamp Record", focusing on the records from "Jia Tai Pu Lamp Record".The eighth chapter is the textual research on "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and other historical materials of the biography. This chapter explores the connection the historical connection between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and five other non--lamp record books, namely "Chan Lin Seng Bao Zhuan", "Seng Bao Zhen Xu Zhuan", "Zheng Fa Yan Zang", "Luo Hu Ye Lu", "Yun Wo Ji Tan", and "Zong Men Wu Ku".The ninth chapter is the research on the examination and correction of the historical materials between "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" and other different quotations historical materials, focusing on their historical sources relation. The quotation materials include "Quotations of Da Hui Pu Jue", "Quotations of Cao Shan Ben Ji", "Quotations of Dong Shan Liang Jia", "Lin Quan Lao Ren Ping Chang Tou Zi Dan Xia Song Gu", "Quotations of Hong Zhi Chan Shi", "Quotations of Yuan Wu Fo Guo Chan Shi", "Quotations of Zhenzhou Lin Ji Hui Zhao Chan Shi", "Quotations of Shuzhou Tou Zi Shan Miao Xu Da Shi", "Quotations of Huang Long Hui Nan Chan Shi", "Quotations of Zu Xin", "Quotations of Baoning Chan Yuan Yong Chan Shi", "Quotations of Bai Yun Shou Duan Chan Shi", "Quotations of Gu Zun Su", and "Quotations of Yun Men Shan Kuang Tai Chan Yuan Kuang Zhen Da Shi". Some anonymous materials about "Wu Deng Hui Yuan" are also attached.The tenth chapter analyzes the Zen--Buddhist poems in "Wu Deng Hui Yuan". The first section in this chapter is Arts of Zen--Buddhist poems in the daily life of the Zen monks, the second chapter is the study about two types of poems which reflects the thoughts of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan", and the third summarizes artistic conception of poems of "Wu Deng Hui Yuan".
