Nouns reflecting those things depending on each other are valent nouns which cannot refer to things without the help of other elements.Nouns can be divided into predicative nouns and non-predicative nouns. This paper aims to study the valence structure of Korean non-predicative nouns, which will be the first study ever. This paper, on the basis of concepts and theory of T-G grammar, describes and tries to establish the syntactic and semantic system of Korean non-predicative nouns and then explores the semantic system of Korean non-predicative nouns by means of both rationalism and empiricism.Chapter One introduces and analyses the main theories and literature of the subject, and then set the approaches and scopes of the study.Chapter Two provides data for the study. On the basis of surveying the previous definitions and classification norms of predicative nouns and non-predicative nouns in Korea, 1000 items of nouns are chosen from "Survey of Modern Korean Frequency" (2002) by Korean National Institute of Korean Language. Then these nouns are divided into predicative nouns and non-predicative nouns.Chapter Three discusses the definition of valence, complement and adjunct, classifies non-predicative nouns into mono-valent nouns and divalent nouns according to the number of arguments and then explores how to establish semantic role system of non-predicative nouns. Semantic roles of non-predicative nouns include possessor, theme, object and content.Chapter Four discusses the markers of the valence structure of Korean non-predicative nouns, including '-ǔy' and '-e daehan'Chapter Five discusses the syntactic expressions of the valence of mono-valent nouns and divalent nouns. Different ways of descriptive methods are adopted to different analytic levels.Chapter Six tries to study Korean mono-valent nouns and divalent nouns cognitively, focusing on ellipsis of mono-valent nouns and micro mechanism of activating its meanings.Chapter Seven makes conclusion.
