This paper, basing its analysis on previous researches done on the relative topics, intends to explore comprehensively the study of Tongjian in Jin and Yuan dynasties. My discussion will be deployed in six chapters as follows. Chapter one lists a complete bibliography on the study of Tongjian in Jin and Yuan dynasties, which is based on various traditional bibliographic data. Chapter two studies the influence of Tongjian and its author, Sima Guang on the ruling class of non-Han ethnic groups in Jin and Yuan periods. Chapter three summarizes the discussion on Tongjian made by Jin literati and scholars, depicts the general perspective of the study of Tongjian in that period, compares with and comments on different brief version of Tongjian circulated in Northern China during Jin and Yuan periods. Chapter four is a further study on Tongjian huzhu developed from some pioneering and profound work that has already done by previous scholars. Stretching in three dimensions known as administrative geography, official posts and family clans, my discussion focuses on the contribution of Tongjian huzhu in textual criticism realm. In this chapter, I also try to throw light on some lost commentaries of Tongjian in Yuan dynasty based on fragmentary records. Chapter five is a review of various studies on Tongjian gangmu by literati and scholars in Yuan dynasty. Although the study of Tongjian gangmu was popular at that time, scholars usually ignored the initial intention of Zhu Xi who edited the Gangmu and his opposition to make any appraisal in a single word. It should also be noticed that Zhu Xi's viewpoint on the legitimacy of Shuhan is not unchangeable, however, most scholars in southern China in Yuan period started their research in the track of legitimism, which was directly caused by the disputation on the compilation of the History of Liao, Jin and Song dynasties. Chapter 6 is the conclusion. A new point of view on Hu Sanxing's commentary of Tongjian is proposed, which is different to Chen Yuan's argument in his Tongjian huzhu biaowei that Huzhu alludes to the current issues by referring the past ones.
